Federal Employees Eligible for Unemployment Insurance
Workers who are feeling the effects of the government shutdown have the chance to get some monetary relief.
The Montana Department of Labor and Industry is reminding federal employees furloughed due to the government shutdown that they are eligible for unemployment insurance benefits. Labor Commissioner Pam Bucy says federal employees will need to apply before Saturday at midnight to collect their benefits next week. Bucy says the Department of Labor dealt with the previous government shutdown in 1996, which lasted 17 days. She says the benefits provide a good stop-gap measure for folks who have to pay for immediate needs.
"That can be a significant imposition on a family. So that can be something that helps them get through. It certainly doesn't make them whole, but it might help them get through."
