Republican Sandy Welch is dropping her request for a statewide recount in the Superintendent of Public Instruction race.
Welch says she hasn't been able to raise the $115,000 needed to pay for the recount. The deadline to come up with the money to cover the cost of hand counting ballots in all 56 counties was this evening.
She previously said the Montana Republican Party would pick up the majority of the cost. The Montana GOP released a statement stating it too was unable to raise enough funds to pay for the recount. Welch lost to Democratic incumbent Denise Juneau by a 0.48% margin.
