FWP Proposes Plan to Kill up to 130 Helena Deer
Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks is seeking authorization to trap and kill up to 130 deer in the Helena city limits next year.
HELENA, Mont. (AP) -- The proposal up for initial consideration Thursday before the state Fish and Wildlife Commission is part of the city's Urban Deer Management Plan to reduce the animal's numbers. Some 670 deer have been removed under the plan since 2003, including 140 this year. FWP officials say an October survey estimates there are about 14 deer per square mile in the city, compared to 34 per square mile last year. Officials say it is likely that the actual deer population is higher than the survey estimates. Next year's plan proposes removing up to 70 deer, in addition to the 60 remaining in the 2013 authorization to kill 200 deer.
