Helena Sand and Gravel is making progress on a pedestrian access tunnel along Interstate 15 between Helena and Montana City.

The project, which was requested by the Montana Department of Transportation, will go underneath I-15 to connect Broadway Street to the road behind the MDT building.  Helena Sand and Gravel is also building a trail that will wrap around MDT headquarters to connect the tunnel to the sidewalk along Highway 12.  Project Manager Jason Fenhaus believes the pedestrian tunnel will be helpful.

"If you drive the interstate here you'll see trails through the grass where people are crossing the interstate anyway. So I think this will definitely help access, and it'll be safer for people to get across the interstate."

Fenhaus says in 2 to 3 weeks, Helena Sand and Gravel will open traffic on the southbound side of I-15 and close off the northbound side.  He expects the entire project to be finished by mid-September.
