Daines focusing on sportsmen, outdoor issues
HELENA, Mont. (AP) -- U.S. Rep. Steve Daines is touting his opposition to gun
control and support for logging as he starts a statewide tour looking at outdoors issues.
The Montana Republican said Thursday he is certain Montanans are strongly
opposed to any new gun control, including last month's failed proposal in the Senate
to expand background checks.
He says he will continue to oppose such proposals.
Daines says he is still talking to U.S. Sen. Jon Tester about the Democrat's
plan to both mandate more logging on federal land and expand wilderness area in
Montana. The Republican has not yet taken a position on the measure.
Daines says he also would like to see the state have more control over the
management of federal land because more logging is needed.
