New road will drive down traffic on Custer Ave.
new road being constructed in between Lowes and Shopko is going to do more than just help customers easily drive from store to store.
This is a common sight on Custer Avenue near several shopping centers between Montana Avenue and Sanders Street. But Public Works Director, John Rendquist says the city is building something to help clear the area.
"This white building is home depot. Lowes is right in this area here and the road that they're building is for the sub division crosses right about here.”
He says the road is meant to serve customers but more importantly to drive down traffic in the nearby area.
"This way there's a connection there where people can go back and forth without creating addition congestion on Custer Avenue."
According to Rendquist there is a lot of planned construction in the Custer Avenue, Sanders Street area so this road here may be the first of its kind that we see of many.
"In the south east quadrant there's new box stores going in there and there'll be additional streets and parking associated with those."
And there are concrete plans in the works for another internal road inside the shopping center area.
"Just to the west of Town Pump there will be another northwest road connecting the Frontage Road to Custer.
With many established restaurants and stores along with the retail area on the rise, the city is working to make sure the roadways stay safe and clear for Helena residents.
