A human skull found on the west side of MacDonald pass last week, could be the missing piece of evidence needed in an ongoing murder investigation.

Today the Powell and Lewis and Clark County Sheriffs addressed the case, after the second instance of human remains in the area.

As the Powell County Sheriff's office is investigating the discovery of a human skull and other remains found off Highway 12, the Lewis and Clark County Sheriff's office is looking into the possibility of its relation to the remains of John "Michael" Crites discovered on the other side of MacDonald pass in October 2011.

L&C County Sheriff Leo Dutton says, “The fact that it was this far off the road there's a similarity there  So, it's a good possibility, but there's no concrete evidence”

According to court documents, a complete skeleton was not recovered on MacDonald Pass last year.  Lewis and Clark County Sheriff Leo Dutton says numerous people are being interviewed in the case.

Call for service reports indicate the Sheriff's office executed 2 search warrants on Turk Road, northwest of Helena Wednesday morning.  Crites lived on the dirt road, where he was involved in heated disputes with some of his neighbors regarding property lines.

While Powell County Sheriff Scott Howard says there aren't any open murder investigations in his county, Lewis and Clark County Sheriff Leo Dutton says he has several open investigations.

Dutton says, “We'll definitely visit with other people, with other cases, things like that until we have a definitive idea who this is.  We gotta be.  If you close your mind as to who this might be, you could miss something.”

Dutton says the State Crime Lab should determine the identity within 3 to 6 weeks.  Until then, many questions remain unanswered.

This is the third incident recently where human remains have been discovered in Montana.  The Powell County Sheriff says it is unknown at this point if this case is related to severed legs found in the Butte area, but they do not believe the Butte incident involves Crites.
