About 100 healthcare professionals gathered in Helena today to discuss HealthShare Montana, a statewide health information exchange.

The organization coordinates doctors, nurses and pharmacists to privately and securely share a patient's medical information.

Presenters discussed HealthShare Montana's projects and the impact they expect them to have on patients. HealthShare Montana representatives say the information exchange will result in better communication and increased safely, quality and value.

Brad Putnam, HealthShare Montana executive director, says, “It's all about patient care and how do we improve that and more that we have access to data and large populations of that data, the better we're going to understand the population of our communities. The better understanding we have, the healthier we can make our communities.”

Representatives say the idea came about through Senator Max Baucus' health information task force in the early 2000, but has only more recently become a reality.
