Arthritis can be crippling for those suffering from the condition.

Residents suffering from arthritis in Helena have found a way to reverse the painful effects of arthritis, using an aquatic exercise program. Swimmers say the results have been dramatic.

Arthritis class participant Sandy Quickenden says, "Two years ago when I was diagnosed with arthritis, I could hardly stand or walk. I'm a normal person now.”

She's not the only one getting great results.

Pete Horton says he suffered from the condition for thirty years and it was debilitating.

"It was pretty miserable."

Now, he's living with significantly less pain.

"I can even comb my hair and brush my teeth, so it's helping.

Class instructor Mallory Frank says "Ugh it's so rewarding to hear that. I hear that a lot actually"

She says the program is specifically designed to relieve the participant’s symptoms.

Horton says, "Moving my shoulders, using the paddles, butterflies, arm rotations, arm circles and shoulder shrugs."

Quickenden says, "Anything that involves the kicking of the legs and the knees."

And the participants say, besides relieving pain, it gives them hope.

Horton says, "Keep me limber. They give me exercise. I'm strengthening my body instead of feeling sorry for myself."

Frank says the class also provides social interaction, which is extremely valuable for her participants.
