The Lewis and Clark Humane Society has transported the 160-plus malamutes from the shelter to another location.

Communications director Liz Harrison says the Humane Society of the U.S. has officially left the shelter in charge of the dogs with a large grant to help offset costs for the next few months. Harrison says the shelter has hired three new employees to help with the off-campus dogs. Since the dogs are evidence in an ongoing criminal investigation, shelter employees cannot spay or neuter them. They remain separated, male and female.

"It could be months before we have a resolution to this case. So, that was another reason why we wanted to really be sure that we were taking the long term view of the situation and the shelter in terms of being able to provide great care for the animals while the justice system moves through its paces,” says Liz Harrison of the Lewis & Clark Humane Society.

Harrison says the shelter will apply for an emergency grant to help with caring for both the malamutes and the other animals at the Humane Society.
