This week a delegation from the City of Helena and Lewis and Clark County along with several Helena residents traveled to Cape Canaveral, Florida to visit the submarine USS Helena.

Friday City Commissioner Dan Ellison passed along some photos from the trip. The visit was a reciprocal one and a bit of a reunion as the captain and several of the crew visited Helena last fall to reconnect the crew with the city for which their ship is named. Ellison explained that Mayor Jim Smith led the delegation which watched the sub come into port at about 7:30 on Thursday morning, September 15th and moor starboard side to a pier on the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. He said once the delegation from Helena was aboard, the sub unmoored and proceeded out the channel and into the Atlantic Ocean.
