Fire damages Smoot Honey warehouse
GREAT FALLS, Mont. (AP) -- A fire at the Smoot Honey warehouse in Power caused up to $500,000 in damages and may have set back the company's ability to package its honey gift sets in time for the holidays. Company controller Carrie Smoot Jensen says the fire started at about 3 p.m. Friday in a warehouse. She tells the Great Falls Tribune that equipment used to extract honey from hives was damaged, packing equipment was smoke-damaged and cardboard and plastic containers were destroyed. Smoot Honey produces about 600,000 tons of honey and ships it all over the United States. Jensen says the honey is stored in 55-gallon barrels that were not damaged by the fire and the company already had some gift boxes packed, but hopes to be able to resume packing before Christmas.
