A series of small fires around the Helena area have been contained after lightning struck several trees and started three fires that ended up burning about a tenth of an acre each.

The West Shore Fire near Canyon Ferry Lake was also caused by lightning. DNRC crews stayed out on the blaze overnight. It burned three acres and was contained early Thursday afternoon. DNRC officials say precipitation and cool weather played a role in containing the fires so quickly.
