New ethics chief recuses self in Schweitzer case
HELENA, Mont. (AP) -- The new commissioner of political practices recently
appointed by Gov. Brian Schweitzer is recusing himself in the governor's own ethic
case.
Last year, a hearings officer recommended that Schweitzer should be fined
$4100 for violating state law by appearing in a public service radio advertisement
during his 2008 re-election campaign.
New commissioner Jim Murry says a replacement will be chosen to issue the
final decision that is due in about a month.
Murry was executive secretary of the Montana State AFL-CIO from 1968 to 1991.
He was recommended by Democratic legislative leaders to fill a slot that has
suffered turnover, partisan turmoil and complaints from staff.
Murry has also served as the treasurer on Schweitzer's political campaigns.
