Fort Hood Memorial

November 10, 2009

President and First Lady attend memorial service for Ft. Hood

Searching for grace and comfort they gather at Fort Hood Army Base in Texas.

More than 3,000 some dressed in red, white, and blue most in army green all struggling to deal with what happened here.

"It's a day for us to just honor the fallen, as fellow soldiers. One big family," said Army Captain Richard Turvey.

"When something drastic like that happens it affects everybody," said Killeen resident Vita Knox

President Obama met with families of the fallen and some of the wounded before stepping to the podium for the first time in his young presidency as consoler-and-chief.

“Here, at Fort Hood, we pay tribute to thirteen men and women who were not able to escape the horror of war, even in the comfort of home. Their memory will be honored in the places they lived and by the people they touched. Their life's work is our security, and the freedom that we too often take for granted," said President Obama.

As this grieving community searches for answers so do investigators

examining Major Nadil Hasan's religious views and whether he may have been influenced by muslim extremists who encouraged violence against American troops.

Authorities are also asking questions about a presentation the alleged gunman made to senior officers two-years ago discussing Islam, suicide bombers and the threats posed by muslim soldiers conflicted about fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan.Memorial

"I think there's a real examination inside the intelligence community and the army about whether any opportunity was lost to identify Hasan as a potential problem," said NBC News Terrorism Analyst Roger Cressey.

But the more immediate problem for so many here is how to deal with their overwhelming loss.

USS New York Arrives

November 2, 2009

New battleship made using steel from World Trade Center sails into NYC for first time.

The latest addition to the U.S. Naval fleet has docked in Manhattan.

The USS New York was named after 9/11 and contains steel from the remains of the World Trade Center.

The assault ship will be commissioned this week in its namesake city.

The USS New York paused in the waters across from the World Trade Center site for a 21 gun salute.

9/11 victims families, NYPD officers, and first responders witnessed the symbolic transformation of America's most devastating attack into a new mission.

On board proud crewmembers, many of them with ties to the new york area.

"I think it was the best thing that could have been done with it. This ship will hopefully go on, once i'm off it, doing peacekeeping missions, humanitarian missions, and keep freedom around the world. It's the best thing that coulda come from the steel," said one sailor.

The bow of the ship contains  7.5 tons of 9/11 steel.

"The steel that's in the bow of the ship gives us an added sense of purpose.  All of the crewmembers know it, feel it, and it really does motivate us everyday," said the ship’s commander F. Curtis Jones.

The latest assault ship in the Navy's fleet toured the Hudson River before docking at pier 88 in Midtown for a ceremony.

The one billion dollar ship was crafted in Louisiana and the assault battleship's gray, sleek exterior extends 684 feet.

It comes complete with a flight deck and transport space below.

And although it was commissioned to be built before the 9/11 attacks, the ship now bears the city's namesake and carries with it so much more.

Earlier today, the Sergeant Major of the Armv, Kenneth O. Preston, announced the 2009 Army Best Warriors.
Unfortunately for Staff Sgt. Aaron Butler of Three Forks, Montana and Spec. Shiloh Becher of Mapleton, North Dakota, the Army Reserve's two competitors in the Best Warriors Competition, the two winners came from U.S. Army Europe and Forces Command.
Just before the announcement, Butler talked with a military reporter about their experiences. "It (competing) was a tremendous opportunity," said Butler. Asked if he would do it again, he said "it's time for me to step aside and let someone else compete."

Staff Sgt Butler is a medical logistics sergeant with the 4225th U.S. Army Hospital in Ft. Harrison, Montana.  In his civilian occupation, Butler is a rancher on KG Ranch in Three Forks.

Sgt. Ryan Brubaker of Plains, Montana represented the National Guard as an NCO.

Last year, the Best Warrior Competition was won by Staff Sgt. Michael Noyce  of Melrose, Montana.
