Lifestyles: A musical journey with Bob Russ
When played, music can come in many different styles. And for one Helena resident his unlikely instrument has provided memories to last a lifetime. Beartooth NBC takes us on a musical journey with the accordion.
Music is said to be a universal language that breaks through all barriers. And whether you listen to it, or play it, it can take you on a journey without ever leaving your home.
"I started actually when I was eleven years old my folks bought my first accordion for me on my eleventh birthday," says Professional Accordionist, Bob Russ.
For Bob Russ, his musical journey began after listening to his father and other famous musicians play the unlikely instrument.
"I just liked it you know. My dad played it and then a great inspiration to a lot of accordionists a lot of youngsters when I was young was Dick Cantino. He came out on this show called the Horris Height show and he won it. I mean he just blasted everybody out of there," says Russ
Little did he know his obsession with the accordion would take him around the country and eventually the world.
"Fort Lauderdale Florida, octoberfest we played two octoberfests ther, played in Milwaukee Wisconsin at a German Festival, St. Paul Minnesota for the Minnesota State Fair twice there," says Russ.
Bob may not be a worldwide celebrity, but to those here in his hometown he might as well be a music hero. Accomplishing any goal you set out for yourself isn't just fulfilling a dream. It's creating a lifestyle that others will never forget.
Bob Russ says he spends most of his days now teaching his grandkids how to play the accordion. He says he even holds lessons for those who are interested in learning as well.
