Lifestyles: Four Georgians students give back to the community
Students at Four Georgians Elementary School are getting a special lesson this week but it's not in math or science. In this week's Lifestyles Report Beartooth NBC talks to students about the importance of giving this holiday season.
Four Georgians Principal Melinda Thompson says they're holding a food drive to teach students about giving and helping others.
“It’s fun, it's exciting to see how they can increase the numbers each day and just really a way to help them learn to be good citizens,” says Thompson.
“I think it's important because it wouldn't be very fun to celebrate the holidays being starving,” says 4th grade student, Nikki MacMillan.
The food drive is also giving students a sense of accomplishment.
“I feel really proud of myself,” says MacMillan.
“I think I'm doing really good and all the other people are too,” says 4th grade student, Owen Qualls.
Their goal is to collect 2000 food items by the end of the week. At the beginning of the Thursday the total was 1139.
“We are putting together boxes that will be filled with items that will be used over the Christmas break for families within our own Four Georgians community,” says Thompson.
With a big goal in mind Principal Thompson is doing a little something extra to encourage the kids to bring food in. As number of food donations increase so do the amount of stripes she wears.
“I think it's really cool seeing our principal dressed up,” says Qualls.
“So we just keep going and going with the more and more stripes as the week goes on. The idea is help Mrs. Thompson earn her stripes by bringing in more food for the food drive,” says Thompson.
Thompson says she hopes to be covered in stripes from head to toe by the end of the week maybe even her hair.
Principal Thompson says after the boxes are made leftover food items will be taken to a food bank.
