Lifestyles: Dancing Lotus Belly Dancing
In this week's Lifestyles Report, you'll meet members of a not-so-ordinary class. In fact, instead of using pencils, they use their bodies to do their homework. Beartooth NBC's Drew Steele has more.
The Dancing Lotus is home to many styles of dance, but one particular style provides great exercise and a way to express creativity.
“American tribal style is based on cues so my arm drops means i'm doing a hip bump. My arm does this means i'm doing an arabic there it's sort of like playing simon says,” says belly dance teacher Bobbi Lambertson.
With tons of activities to incorporate belly dancing the advanced class offers spots for women and men.
“I actually joined for therapeutic reasons. I'm a body worker and i was looking to learn the control of different muscles in and around the pelvis and I'll tell you what I found things I never knew existed,” says belly dancer Carrie Jones.
“For me, if you look at the giant scope of belly dancing there's two different styles oriental styles, tribal styles. I love tribal style because I get to dance with a group of women,” says Lambertson.
Of course, with any new dance you have to build a foundation before you can really start to be creative. But having a love for belly dancing makes it more than a hobby – it's a lifestyle.
“As far as a lifestyle some people definitely get the bug and once you do have the bug your obsessed,” says Lambertson.
Bobbi Lambertson says she's hoping to start a beginner's class at the start of the new year.
