Voter Initiatives: Seg. 1

Font size: Decrease font Enlarge font

About voter approved initiatives and the power of elected lawmakers to overturn those initiatives - which became a hot topic in the most recent legislative session.

Representative Mike Milburn is the speaker of the Montana House of Representatives and sponsored a bill that would have flatly overturned the medical marijuana initiative passed by voters in 2004.

Nathan Pierce is a board member and spokesman for a recently formed group, the Montana Coalition for Rights, which is pushing for a change to the Montana constitution that would require lawmakers to send suggested changes of voter initiatives back to the voters for another vote.

Ryan Whalen is a seasoned reporter on many fronts including Montana’s political scene.

Thank you so much for covering this issue Mr. Dunwell.

I would like to respond to Rep Milburn's defense of his repeal for medical cannabis in Montana. I was on the hill all session - fighting for patients rights - from January through May.

I brought the Federal Cannabis patient - Irvin Rosenfeld - who was also on the Dunwell Report in January - to the state not just once - but 3 times in 6 months - to educate Montanans.

In March - as the repeal bill was failing - and when they started the creation of SB423 - Irv was in the Capitol with Montana's youngest medical cannabis patient - and cancer survivor - Cash Hyde. Irv and I tried to lobby house and senate folks - to educate.

We had doors slammed in our face. If we were not an opponent - they did NOT want to talk to anybody.

I saw Mike Milburn on the lawn of the state Capitol on September 19, 2011 - 4 days before this report was done. In an attempt to approach him (he avoided me like the plague during session) I went up to Mike. He was very nice until he realized who I was - and then he told me "You're all just a bunch of potheads - wanting to smoke dope"

I get the feeling Mr. Milburn has absolutely no respect or belief in the medical aspects from that statement - don't you?

Well....I was there and witnessed his tone and body language - and I'm here to tell you - this man does NOT care about the will of the people. He won't even TALK to the people - unless you agree with him.

Is that how we want our political offices managed? How about we base some of our laws on fact - and science - rather than Reefer Madness mentality?

I truly hope we can have OPEN dialogue with our political leaders from here on out. After this past session - it is sorely needed.
