Class Act: Toothpaste Collection
A local church group has been working tirelessly over the past 2 months to gather supplies to help people in need.
For this week's Class Act, I spoke with a group of high schoolers who reached out to members of the Helena community, the Hannaford Street Bible Church youth group gets together every Wednesday night. During one of the youth group meetings, instead of taking part in a normal worship service, registered nurse Linda Darelius spoke to the group of high school students about her patients in Tanzania who were in need.
Youth group member Samuel Johnson says Darelius challenged the students to gather toothpaste to help her impoverished patients. Johnson says her presentation was very touching, and it motivated him to help.
Samuel Johnson says, "It's really great to actually do something that really matters and can really make a difference and just to be able to do something for God."
Josephine Johnson, Youth Group Member, says, "At first I was like ' Wow that's a lot of tubes of toothpaste but, I definitely think that everyone was really positive like 'Oh no, we can do it.'"
Youth Pastor Gezer Garcia says he's impressed by the work his students have done. He says they've greatly surpassed his expectations.
Garcia says, "Going house to house and going to the supermarkets and inviting people from the church also to help with this. So it's all about them. I'm very excited and proud for what they've done."
Youth group member Thomas Bushnell says reaching the total of 1,500 boxes was a rewarding experience for him
Bushnell says, "The best part was kind of seeing it all come together at the end I think. How we actually reached our goal handily and we even went beyond."
It's the drive and ambition to give back, that makes the youth group at Hannaford Street Bible Chuch, a Class Act.
