With the holiday season in full swing, the Carroll College Student Nurses Association is doing their part to give back to the Helena community.

Each year the Carroll College Student Nurses Association, or CCSNA, holds a Christmas gift drive for Shodair Children's Hospital.  In this week's Class Act, Beartooth NBC’s Jill Jagelski sat down with some nursing students to find out why this drive holds a special place in their heart.

Before a nursing student graduates from Carroll College, they must work one, 6 week clinical rotation at Shodair Children's Hospital.  CCSNA Vice President Will Lamb says during his time there, he developed a close bond with the children.

Lamb says, "After you finish your rotation it's really hard not to have your heart just go out to these kids and one of the issues they have is there is kids that are going to have to be at the hospital over Christmas and Shodair doesn't really have a budget to get everyone gifts."

Each year, the CCSNA runs a Christmas gift drive for the kids.  Nursing student Mariah Arneson says she saw first-hand the need for new toys.

Anderson says, "It's really important that we get to keep replacing them especially at Christmas time so they can get new toys and it kind of helps them feel more normal and they are not away from home and it gives them something to look forward to every year."

The importance of the drive is understood not only by students who've worked at Shodair.  Abby Hunthausen has yet to do her rotation, but already donated toys to the cause.  By reaching out and helping local kids in need, the CCSNA is able to bring holiday cheer to some children every year.  And that kind of attitude is exactly why the CCSNA is this week's Class Act.

There are three drop boxes for donations throughout the campus including one at the nurses office in Simperman Hall.  The drive runs from now until December 12th and any new, unwrapped gifts are welcomed.
